HISTORY OF LAGRO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In early seventies, GSIS La Mesa Homesite Subdivision
Phase I (now LAGRO) was opened to the first one hundred fifty family
awardees. Almost all these families had children of school age. Since
the place was quite far from their respective schools and there were no
private school near the vicinity, the homeowners then formed a group
called GLAMEHA to work out with the problems in sending their children
to a near school. Luckily enough, that there were eight teachers in the
place who helped GLAMEHA in putting – up a school and to give credit to
these teachers they were Mrs. Estrelita Gumabon – Grade I; Mrs. Aurora
Jacinto – Grade II; Lydia Palafox – Grade III; Mrs. Marigold Arizabal –
Grade IV; Mrs. Mila Curry – Grade V; Mrs. Luisa Cajipe – Grade VI; and
Mr. Samuel Salcedo and Mrs. Soledad Manalo – Special Teachers.
Mrs.
Commemoraccion M. Concepcion, City Schools Superintendent, Quezon City,
approved the request of parents and teachers for a school building,
learning that it was an urgent need. In July 1974, a complete elementary
curriculum was offered in Lagro Elementary School. Six unoccupied
houses in block 59 were used as temporary classrooms. Mr. Herminio
Abrina was then the first principal. Parents, teachers and civic
spirited citizens helped in putting – up the school. Came December 1974,
teachers had their carolling for its improvement. GLAMEHA had done a
lot under the leadership of Mr. Antonio Arizabal.
Lagro
Development and Realty Corporation donated a 23,567 square meters of
lot in Block 58 for a school site for Lagro Elementary School and Lagro
High School. A makeshift, a one-classroom building made of sawali, light
materials and asbestos roofing started the Lagro Elementary School
housing 300 pupils, 8 teachers and a principal.
From
the Marcos – Type building that was turned over and blessed on June 18,
1976, more buildings were built. For more than 30 years now, starting
from administration of the first principal, Mr. Herminio Abrina, and the
continued efforts made by Mrs. Milagros Dimla, Mrs. Anunciacion A.
Zamudio, Mrs. Lolita Aguilar, Mrs. Sofonias A. De Guzman, Dr. Navarra,
Mrs. Florentina A. Santos, Dr. Alicia O. Reyes, Dr. Angelina E. Avestro, Dr. Lilia L. Garcia and Mr. Jay Ureta, the incumbent principal.
Lagro Elementary
School has thirteen (13) buildings and facilities, which are now
adequate for our ever-burgeoning school populace. The construction of 3-storey 12-classroom HB building replaced the
anay-infested RPUS2 Bldg, Industrial Arts Bldg and Home Economics
Building.
As of November 2012, Lagro Elementary
School has a population of 3,319 pupils, with 83 teachers, 4
non-teaching personnel (1 e-librarian, 2 clerks and 1 property clerk), 3
utility workers and 1 security guard. Three (3) Erin Miles utility
workers are being paid by the city government, the rest by the DEPED,
under the management of 1 principal. It offers pre-elementary education
(kindergarten), Elementary Level (Grades I – VI) and a complete program
for SPED class since 1974. Today, Lagro Elementary School is very well
known to be one of the pilot schools in Quezon City.
